2 officers injured in high speed chase through Fremont

FREMONT, OH (Toledo News Now) -

Two Fremont police officers are recovering from injuries that came when they crashed together during a police chase late Saturday night.

An officer with the Fremont Police Department attempted to stop a driver around 11:40 p.m. Saturday near the intersection of Sycamore and Wilson in Fremont when he ran a stop sign. Officers say the driver took off, leading authorities on a high speed pursuit through the city and county.

The chase ended when two police cruisers were involved in a crash at the intersection of Hickory and Wilson at 11:41 p.m. Both vehicles were en route to assist with the pursuit.

The vehicle involved in the chase was later found by officers around 2:35 a.m. Sunday, unoccupied in the 800 block of White Avenue. Officer say the vehicle was towed and its owner was notified. It is unknown at this time if the vehicle was stolen.

Both Fremont Police officers involved in the crash were transported to hospitals with serious injuries. Senior Patrolman Robert Schultz was treated and released following the accident late Saturday night. Probationary Patrolman Erik Kessler is still in a Toledo hospital recovering from his injuries.

Police Chief Tim Wiersma says the Ohio State Highway Patrol is reconstructing the crash to determine if either patrolman should be charged.

Police have not identified the driver of the vehicle who was fleeing and eluding police prior to the crash. They are waiting for a search warrant to check the car for fingerprints.
