When we think of drug addicts, we don't normally picture our grandparents.

But here's something you may not know. It surprised me. Hundreds of thousands of our senior citizens are misusing prescription drugs.

A recent USA Today investigation found older patients are getting more medications that can become addictive. These are meds for pain relief and psychoactive medications. They also found the number of seniors misusing prescription pain relievers is on the rise and that drug related emergency room visits by people 55 and older are increasing.

Now that we're aware of the problem, there are things we can do. If you are a senior, evaluate your current situation when it comes to prescription drugs. If you think you might have a problem, seek help.
If you have an older parent or a grandparent, now is the time to ask them about medications they are taking.

You might be surprised at what you find.

I'm James Smith.
