MARSHALL COUNTY, AL (WAFF) -

A Marshall County Sheriff's deputy was terminated for allegedly assaulting a handcuffed detainee.

Sheriff Scott Walls said he is limited in what he can say about the case because it is an ongoing process, and the deputy is appealing his termination.

Walls confirmed Deputy Steven Alexander was terminated following an incident involving an arrest.

Devin Kimsey said he was the person arrested in the incident, and is still recovering from the wounds he suffered at the hands of the deputy last month. He said injuries include rocks embedded in his forehead and damaged blood vessels in one of his eyes.

The detainee said he was being taken to a mental health facility in Gadsden. He asked the deputy several times where he was being taken and that he wanted to speak to his mother, but the deputy refused.

At some point in Albertville, Devin said he kicked out the glass of the patrol vehicle. Devin said the officer stopped the car, asked him to get out and lay on the ground, which he did.

What happened next, Devin said, landed him in the hospital.

"The police officer that he called for backup arrived, and he walked over and punched me in the face," said Devin. "Now, I'm laying on the ground, and he dropped his knee directly on my head, full momentum, and I just felt my eyeball just squish up like a ping-pong ball. I was still handcuffed."

Attempts to reach Alexander and his attorney in Gadsden were unsuccessful. Alexander's appeal to the Personnel Board is set for Monday at 3 p.m.
