HUNTSVILLE, AL (WAFF) -

Robert Bentley has won the Republican nomination for Governor according to the Associated Press.

The declaration was made less than hour after polls closed. His opponents in the race were Stacy Lee George and Bob Starkey.

Shortly after the result, the Republican Governors Association issued a statement.

"Guided by the principle that small, limited government makes for a strong, prosperous state, Governor Robert Bentley's leadership has yielded impressive results in Alabama," said RGA Chairman Chris Christie.

"Governor Bentley has done the job he was elected to do, and he's done it well," Christie continued. "He's keeping taxes low, supporting small businesses and job creators, improving education and fostering an environment where every Alabaman who wants a job can get one. The Republican Governors Association is proud to support Governor Bentley's re-election campaign."

Bentley will face-off against Dr. Parker Griffith, who won the Democratic Party's nomination later in the evening.
