State legislator Paul DeMarco and Alabama Policy Institute founder Gary Palmer will be in a runoff in the seven-person race for the Republican nomination in Alabama's 6th congressional district.
DeMarco is a state representative from Homewood and the chair of the influential Judiciary Committee. With 96 percent of precincts reporting, DeMarco won 32 percent of the vote and Gary Palmer won 20 percent.
"I'm eternally grateful. This has been a long journey. An incredible journey. We're only halfway there. I will not take anything for granted," DeMarco said.
They will face each other in the runoff election July 15. Palmer says he's ready for the next election adding that he won his votes by running the right campaign.
"It's been along campaign and I'm very, very grateful, very thankful," he said.
Other contenders for the runoff included state Sen. Scott Beason of Gardendale, surgeon Chad Mathis and business executive Will Brooke.
Mattress company owner Tom Vigneulle and retired attorney Rob Shattuck trailed badly.
