COLUMBUS, GA (WTVM) -

Jerry Wayne Merritt, 47, has been arrested and charged with killing a man on Fort Benning Rd. around 9:15 Friday morning, June 6.

Merritt is scheduled to show up at Recorder's Court at 2:00 PM on June 9, 2014.

The victim, identified as 44-year-old Anthony Taylor, was found laying on the ground at the Pure Gas Station on Fort Benning Rd. He was transported to Midtown Medical Center, and found to be shot in the left side of the back. During transport, officials say he went into cardiac arrest and died a short time later.

Another man, later identified at Merrit, approached police at the crime scene, and said he was the shooter. Police then detained him.

The scene was first active around Pure Gas Station and Chattahoochee Valley Health Clinic, where authorities closed the area off with police tape.

A witness, who did not want his name released, said he was driving on the street when the shooting happened. At first he thought the sounds were caused by firecrackers. When he realized that shots were fired, the witness says he became concerned for his own safety.

"I heard a pop and when I looked I saw some guy was running....and he ran across the street toward me and after that I turned around and called 9-1-1," he said.

Merritt is charged with Murder, Possession of a Firearm by a Convicted Felon, and Possession of a Firearm during the commission of a crime.

This case remains under investigation.
