AUBURN, AL (WTVM) -

It has been several months in the making, and the public has voiced their input every step of the way.

The City of Auburn hosted an open house Friday, June 6, where citizens viewed and weighed in one last time on the Downtown Master Plan.

"All the exhibits that we had made available as part of the three public meetings, we had all those laid out all around the room so folks could engage themselves visually," explains Director of Planning, Forrest Cotten.

The plan includes downtown, the city's historic district, West Magnolia Ave. and Glenn Ave., down South College to Miller Ave.

The goal is to create a unified look through the downtown area.

Cotton says the biggest area of interest to people was relocating the baseball fields and transitioning Felton Little Park into a traditional green space.

"We'll probably be working on some zoning implementation in a fairly short term as we move into the latter part of this calendar year and early calendar year 2015, much like we are with the Opelika Road Initiative," says Cotton.

As part of the solution to increase school funding, plans for the Downtown Master Plan could be delayed, reduced in scope or eliminated.

Residents will soon see renovations to the downtown alleyways on Magnolia Ave. and College St.

However, the original plan of including improvements to the parking lot adjacent to the parking garage will be delayed in the meantime.

"The safe thing to say is those improvements will be made," says Cotton, "but will have to be scheduled a little longer than what might have been anticipated."
