Officials with the Mississippi Department of Environmental Quality have closed a section of beach in Gulfport due to a sewage spill on Tuesday. Officials say people should avoid the water and seafood caught between Alfonso Drive east to Arkansas Avenue.
MDEQ said construction activity in the city resulted in a sewage bypass that has been contained and is now being rerouted.
MDEQ said they will monitor the water and lift the closure when bacteria levels return to normal. For more information on the Mississippi Beach Monitoring Program, visit http://www.usm.edu/gcrl/msbeach/index.cgi.
