Drought conditions could improve with approaching Monsoon

Dark red indicates severe drought, while yellow indicates abnormally dry conditions. Dark red indicates severe drought, while yellow indicates abnormally dry conditions.

The drought conditions around the state have worsened since last Monsoon with the lack of rain since the previous July. If you recall last Monsoon, some areas of southern Arizona were completely drought free. Since then we have seen conditions grow worrisome across the region.

We are in our driest time of the year and with no rain expected in the next several weeks I do not see any improvements with the drought. The National Weather Service's Climate Prediction Center thinks that most of Arizona will improve in the drought conditions over the summer, with some spots in the state forecasted to go drought free.

The above image shows that areas in green should improve in drought over the summer, while areas in a greenish-tan should improve slightly. Notice here in southeastern Arizona we are completely shaded in the tan color and that means that the Climate Prediction Center thinks we will see improvements during this year's Monsoon.

When looking at temperatures the next three months we should be near normal with a better chance of being above, rather than below normal. That means highs on more days are likely to be in the triple digits, rather than in the 80s or 90s. Probably not the news we want to hear but we are used to hot weather this time of year! Notice the image below, we are just barely in the above normal temperature range. While Alaska and California are likely to have a hot summer.

Here is what they think with rainfall, again not the best news but it is not bad news either. The Rockies are expected to have good summer rains, while Arizona should see normal to wetter conditions.
