BIRMINGHAM, AL (WBRC) -

Birmingham police are investigating an early-morning fatal accident on Thursday.

The accident happened around 2:45 a.m. on New Mulga Loop Road. The car involved left the roadway and overturned in the woods before catching fire.

Crews at the scene say the fire was so intense that neither the car nor driver could be identified. The body was sent to the coroner's office for identification.

The Jefferson County Coroner's Office later identified the body as Christopher Shawn Spain, a 25-year-old from Adamsville.

The scene has now been cleared by authorities.
