BRADLEY COUNTY, TN -

(NBC) – More than 200 dogs found living in deplorable conditions in East Tennessee are in need of new homes.

Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SPCA) volunteers say they rescued 237 dogs in one building and another 12 dogs inside a home in the town of McDonald in Bradley County.

NBC affiliate WCRB-TV spoke to a nearby resident who said neighbors had suspected something was happening and had reported it, but never saw authorities take any action.

Volunteers say many of the dogs were crammed five to a cage and standing in their own feces.

Some of the dogs were taken to rescue centers while others, that were barely alive, were sent straight to the animal hospital.

"These guys have suffered enough and we're going to do all that we can to get them happy and healthy and get them some good homes," said Charles Brown, who is with Pet Placement Center.

To learn more about these dogs, you can call the Pet Placement Center in Chattanooga at 423- 877-0738.
