AUBURN, AL (WTVM) -

A familiar face in Auburn has passed away. Johnny Richmond, known as Mr. Penny, died at his home in Auburn on June 5.

Coroner Harris says he does not know Richmond's cause of death, but he has been in hospice care for illness. Richmond was a crossing guard at Dean Road Elementary School for 37 years, but he was better known for his spirited show of support for the Auburn football team. Each time the Tigers scored, Richmond would drop to the ground and do a push-up.

In 2012, Richmond suffered from a self-inflicted gunshot wound to the head. He told News Leader 9 in an interview last year that he survived because he had God on his side, and that he was thankful for a second chance.

Richmond's funeral arrangements will be handled by Peterson Williams Funeral Home in Opelika.
