WAUKESHA, WI (WITI/CNN) - Two 12-year-old Wisconsin girls accused of stabbing their friend 19 times appeared in court on Wednesday.

Lawyers for both suspects argue they should be tried as juveniles and not adults.

A judge ordered a competency evaluation for the one of the suspects at the request of her attorney, who said he believes his client showed signs of mental illness.

"Yeah, right now, basically, the doctor will do an evaluation, we will do a report, that report will be kept confidential, and we'll go from there," said Anthony Cotton, defense attorney.

"This case prevents me from talking about the specifics of the case. I can let you guys know that my focus right now is assessing my client's ability to understand the proceedings in her mental health status at this point. I'm also gathering information to help in the representation of my client. I'm mindful of the fact that the victim suffers from significant injuries," said Joseph Smith Jr., public defender. "And I join my client, my client's family in wishing the victim a swift recovery. My belief is that this case, my client's issues cannot be adequately addressed in the adult criminal system. So I'm going to be advocating strongly that she be transferred to the juvenile justice system, which is designed to address the needs and treatment of children with her age and level of maturity."

Smith, who is the second girl's attorney, has not yet ordered an evaluation, but says he may do so at a later date.

The suspects are being held on $500,000 bail each.

They are expected to be back in court in July.

The stabbing victim, also 12 years old, is now recovering at home.
