SAN FRANCISCO (KPIX/CNN) - Texas Gov. Rick Perry raised eyebrows in San Francisco when he compared homosexuality to alcoholism.

Perry was asked if he thought homosexuality was a disorder during an appearance at the Commonwealth Club.

"I may have the genetic coding that I'm inclined to be an alcoholic, but I have the desire not to do that. And I look at the homosexual issue as the same way," Perry said.

According to KPIX, there was a noticeable gasp from some people in the audience.

Perry's comments came just days after a controversial move by Texas Republicans approving language in the party platform to support voluntary psychological "therapy" to convert homosexuals to heterosexuals.

Perry is serving his final term as Texas governor.
