TUCSON, AZ (Tucson News Now) -

The alerts you receive on your phone are important for the here and now, but also for the future.

Global temperatures are on the rise.

Associate Professor Chris Castro of the University of Arizona says over time, that could change the monsoon.

"Our climate in Arizona is like this, hot & dry, before the monsoon," Castro said. "And then the monsoon... then it goes like this. The extremes associated in each of those regimes gets worse."

That means more dangerous heat, more destructive wildfires, and more damaging floods.

We can now see why this is going to happen in climate computer models.

"(It's) due to an increase in computer power," Castro said.

These are so detailed they can see how an individual thunderstorm could affect your neighborhood in a warmer world.

"There is a dollar amount associated with that," said Castro. "There is a public safety and national security implication to that."

Which is why insurance companies, city mangers, the department of defense, and many more are looking to these models so we can plan for a safer future today.
