OPELIKA, AL (WTVM) -

Two tractor-trailers and at least two passenger cars were involved in an accident at the Highway 280 and Shelton Mill Junction intersection in Opelika.

Preliminary investigation revealed that one 18-wheeler rear-ended the other at a red traffic light. The cars were damaged when the trucks impacted. Cleanup is expected to take several hours.

Both truck drivers received critical injuries. The 53-year-old driver of the truck that was rear-ended was flown to Columbus Regional via Life Flight helicopter. The second truck driver was transported to East Alabama Medical Center by ambulance. The drivers of the passenger cars received minor injuries and were also treated at EAMC. Their identities have not been released at this time.

This is an ongoing investigation.
