LUMPKIN, GA (WTVM) -

All hands are back on deck in Lumpkin after the volunteer fire department shut down almost a month ago.

News Leader 9's Brittany Dionne met with city officials who say they want citizens to know they are safe.

In May, firefighters hung up their equipment after negotiations to purchase a secondary fire truck turned sour with city officials.

Mayor Charles Gibson says disagreements over how much money to spend on a secondary truck caused the divide between some city officials and department heads.

Now, a new fire chief has been appointed and he says he's ready to pull the department back together.

"We were able to make an assessment of the fire department and the good news is the engine fire truck we currently have is fully capable of pumping and is in excellent shape," says Fire Chief Steven Jordan.

Chief Jordan has over 14 years of fire fighting experience. He says he spoke with former Fire Chief Greg Stewart who says the old dedicated crew of volunteer firefighters are ready to get back to work.

"He told me that they all would like to stay. The thing about volunteer firefighting is it's a passion that people have. They have a passion to help the community. We're very thankful for the firefighters here in the city of Lumpkin," said Chief Jordan.

He says the city has located an additional $15,000 to add to the current $100,000,000 in a SPLOST account to purchase a new truck.

"We are actively looking for an additional fire truck, we are actively looking for a new fire truck. We found some additional resources and money that we can look at."

Above all, Jordan says his main concern is to ease the minds of citizens and grow the department.

"We are actively recruiting volunteers and if anybody is interested in being a firefighter we are happy to put them through that training."
