Over the next several years, Auburn residents will see Opelika Road undergo many changes as it receives a much needed, multimillion dollar face-lift.
The planning process for Renew Opelika Road project began two years with a series of public meetings.
As a result, on Tuesday, June 17, the Auburn City Council approved proposed changes to the zoning ordinance.
"We are really updating zoning in that area in a more contemporary fashion to hopefully facilitate infill development and redevelopment. I think we are already seeing that," explains Planning Director, Forrest Cotten.
These modifications included new zoning designations, providing reduced setbacks, increased flexibility for buffer yards, and changes to permitted uses.
They are aimed at making regulations more flexible for business owners and property owners as they look at redeveloping their store fronts.
"If you have road frontage on Opelika Road and even some of the parcels that sit a modest distance back, those are all going to be rezoned to either corridor redevelopment districts or suburban or urban districts," explains Cotten.
