Columbus officer attacked at home by unidentified assailants

Columbus Police Officer allegedly attacked at Smiths Station home Tuesday morning

SMITHS STATION, AL (WTVM) - On Tuesday June 17, 2014, at approximately 5 a.m. CDST, Lee County Deputy Sheriffs were dispatched to an address in the 200 block of Lee Road 404 in Smiths Station in reference to an assault.

Deputies arrived at the scene and made contact with the victim, who is employed as a police officer for the city of Columbus, Georgia.  The victim was suffering from a knot on the back of his head and had a slightly swollen left arm.  According the victim, he had gotten ready for work when he walked outside of his home to retrieve an item from his vehicle.

While in his yard, the victim heard a male sounding voice asking for "help". The victim then attempted to investigate the cry for help when he was struck in the back of the head with some type of blunt object by another unknown male.  The victim fell to the ground and the two subjects then began to strike him in his torso and arms and then fled on foot.  He was wearing his full uniform and duty belt while he was being assaulted.

The victim was unable to give any type of description of the suspects other than two males wearing dark clothing. The victim was treated at the scene by emergency medical personnel and later transported to Columbus Regional Medical Center by a family member where he was treated and released. This case is still under investigation.
