Family creates first fund for IVF in Charlotte region

CHARLOTTE, NC (WBTV) -

Friday, little John Chemplavil wore a pair of red sunglasses as he licked the vanilla icing from a cupcake with one giant candle.

But he wouldn't be celebrating his birthday without the help of fertility expert Dr. Rebecca Usadi.

At Carolinas HealthCare System's Reproductive Medicine and Infertility Center for a party for John, his mom had a message for Usadi and her team.

"Thank you all so much for all the amazing work that you did and for helping us become parents," Lauren Chemplavil said, struggling to hold back tears. "I don't think we could ever say thank you enough for that because we just absolutely love having John in our life."

In fact, Lauren and her husband, James, are so grateful, they've started a fund to help other couples through what can be an extremely expensive process.

"It does cost a lot of money," James said, "but it's hard to put a price on having a child. We were lucky enough to be in a position to be able to do that. But we know a lot of people aren't."

It is the very first fund to help couples with fertility challenges in the Charlotte region, and Usadi will help oversee it at Carolinas Health System.

"IVF is very successful," said Usadi, "but unfortunately it does cost several thousand dollars – often $10,000 to $12,000 per cycle – and many patients either don't have insurance for it or are only partially covered, so thanks to the very generous contribution by the Chemplavil's we were able to start raising money for a fund."

The fund is growing, and Carolinas Healthcare says it should be able to start distributing money within the next two years so more people can experience the joy of becoming parents.

James says he'll never forget the day he found out Lauren was pregnant with John. "I'll never forget it as long as I live," he said. "It was one of the best days of my life."

Carolinas HealthCare is hoping other donors will come forward to help grow the fund the Chemplavil's started.

If you're interested in making a contribution, you can do so online at GiveCarolinas.org.
