(WMC) – WMC Action News 5's Bang for Your Buck segment saves you money on all kinds of items and services; Andrew Douglas is talking about the growing cost of weddings.

The average wedding costs about $26,000 and here are the top five ways to save on your wedding, according to Bottomline Publications.

1. Don't say wedding and time it right.

You can save as much as 20 percent if you avoid using the word "wedding" when you are looking for venues, caterers and music; call it a family reunion. Also an off-season wedding like in March or early November can save you 15 percent or more. You can even consider Friday evening instead of Saturday.

2. Save on flowers.

Wholesale clubs like Costco and Sam's Club sell roses and other wedding flowers at 60 percent less than retail prices. Order them in advance and arrange them in simple containers from Michaels, Target, or The Home Depot. You're talking about a saving of nearly $800 for a dozen centerpieces.

3. Serve a signature drink.

Alcohol is often the highest wedding expense. Serving a festive signature drink along with a few beers and wines comes to about $30 a person. For 150 guests, that's a savings of $3,300.

4. Use cupcakes instead of a standard cake.

The average wedding cake costs $500, but many people spend up to $1,000. Simply put, cupcakes are big money savers.

5. Choose a playlist.

Guests dance as happily to a well-chosen playlist from your computer or iPod piped over a great sound system as to a DJ or a band. When you invite your guests, ask them to send in song requests with the RSVP.
