COLUMBUS, GA (WTVM) - WTVM and our sister station WXTX hosted a blood drive to give the community the chance to help save a life by hosting a blood drive with the American Red Cross on June 25 between noon and 7 p.m. to donate.
The donor center was at 7490 Veterans Parkway, near B. Merrell's and Front Porch of the South.
Nearly 65 units of blood are used everyday in Columbus, Ga., but unfortunately blood shortage is a big issue in the summer time.
"We see maybe 8 to 9 people come into our center to give blood in summer," Jasamine Jones, the team supervisor for the American Red Cross said. "If we can get 20 to 30 people to donate blood, then it's a great day."
The center collected 32 units of blood which can help about 90 people in our community.
A Columbus father, 51-year-old Phillip Bowden, said donating blood is important. His two year old daughter Brinkley was only 28 weeks old when she was born. She suffered from various health issues, and Bowden said she survived thanks to blood transfusion.
"I share my daughter's story," Bowden said. "I want people to know that they are making a difference when they donate blood."
The American Red Cross explained donating one pint of blood can save or help up to three lives.
These are the upcoming blood drives in the Valley.
