Caught On Camera: lawn equipment stolen from school landscapers

Police say a landscaping crew tending to the grounds of the Columbus State University campus left one of their work trucks alone in a parking lot, and in less than a minute's time, a man took the opportunity to steal about $1,500.00 worth of equipment.  A nearby resident saw the theft taking place and told the crew what happened.

"A witness had flagged him down and observed that an unknown individual pulled up to his work trailer and removed several items, including a chainsaw, a weed eater, and a blower," said Sgt. Jeremy Brett Stanelle.

Most of the gates on campus stay closed and require a valid ID to open them, but this particular entrance is open at peak hours of the day to maintain traffic flow. Police say the suspect didn't appear to have any business being on school property except to steal this equipment.

"This person pulled into the public visitor entrance at a dormitory off University Avenue, and within a matter of seconds, the driver had exited the vehicle, gotten the equipment from the work trailer, he had another person in the car with him who moved over into the driver's seat.  After he loaded all the equipment into the car, he got into the passenger seat and he left the scene," said Stanelle.

Police are surprised by the boldness of this theft -committed during the daytime- in the presence of cameras, eye witnesses, and with the owner of the truck working a short distance away. Anyone who recognizes the man in this video is asked to call Columbus State Police at 706 507 8911.

The owner of the landscaping company originally posted images of this theft on the Neighborhood Watchers group on Facebook.
