MEMPHIS, TN -

(WMC) – Two teens are charged with attempted first-degree murder after shooting at Memphis police during a traffic stop.

Just before 8 p.m. Tuesday evening, Airways Station officers were making a traffic stop at Airways Boulevard and Lamar Avenue. Carl Johnson, 18, was the driver of the stopped car and 19-year-old Martez Wheeler was a passenger.

When police asked for Johnson's drivers' license, he sped off. Officers tried to stop the suspects again when both suspects bailed out of the car and fled on foot.

Officers stopped their police car and were getting of the car when Wheeler fired several gunshots toward the officers. The police car was hit several times, but none of the officers were hit.

Police did not return fire and continued their pursuit. Officers captured Johnson in the area of Wildrose Street and Armistead Avenue.

They continued to search for Wheeler. Chopper 5 video showed officers kicking in the doors of a home in that area. Neighbors say up to 20 police cars responded to the search and stayed in the area until just before 11 p.m.

Wheeler later turned himself into police.

Johnson was arrested and charged with driving while license suspended/ revoked/canceled, evading arrest, and attempted first-degree murder. Wheeler was arrested and charged with two counts of attempted first-degree murder and evading arrest.
