Fire Chief: Phenix City house fire total loss for family

Fire crews battled a large house fire on Lee Rd. 450 off of Auburn Rd. in Phenix City on Wednesday morning, June 25.

Smith Station Fire Chief, Bob Johnson, tells News Leader Nine at least three fire departments worked together to quickly get control of what he says was a fully involved house fire. Neighbors say they didn't hear anything.

Neighbor Art Miller explains, "When I walked down, the house was fully involved. All you could see was flames coming through the roof and everything."

Fire crews arrived just after 9 a.m. to find flames bursting through the roof and windows of the home. Johnson, tells us a full on rage against the flames ensued.

"Upon our first unit's arrival, we made a defensive attack, and we had to continue with the defensive attack until we had knock down so we could make an interior attack," Johnsons says.

He says after battling for more than half an hour, the fire was contained. And when the smoke settled, all that remained was a singed frame of what used to be a home on Lee Road 450.

"I just feel sorry for them," Miller says.

The homeowner returned shortly after to sift through ruble and debris. As he searched for his four missing cats, the owner quietly asked me to wrap up filming so that he could piece together whatever he could salvage. As I packed up, neighbors stopped by to lend a hand to the folks next door.

Miller adds,"If there's anything we can do to help them, you know, we're here. We're available. All the neighborhood is."

No one was injured in this morning's house fire. A cause for the fire has not been officially identified at this time.

At last word, the American Red Cross had been contacted to help the displaced family. We have received several requests for information on how to help this family. If you'd like that information, contact the American Red Cross West Central Georgia chapter at 706.323.5614.
