KSLA News 12 Editorial: June 26th-Common Core

He was for it before he was against it. That pretty much describes Louisiana Governor Bobby Jindal's stance on Common Core.

Common Core is a set of standards for kindergarten through 12th grade in english, arts/literacy and mathematics . It was adopted four years ago by 43 states including Louisiana and Arkansas. Governor Jindal used to be in favor of it, now he says it's the federal government trying to take over Louisiana's education system and he won't have that.

What the governor has now done is create considerable confusion heading into the next school year. The State Board of Elementary and Secondary Education says it has the right to implement Common Core and will do just that. Looks like we're headed for a long and expensive court battle.

This confusion puts teachers, parents and students in a very difficult situation. Something we certainly don't need.

Let me know what you think.

I'm James Smith.

Tonight at 11:59 p.m., KSLA's extended agreement with DirecTV will expire and they may drop this station from their lineup. We have been working hard to stay on their system, but they have simply refused to make a fair deal.

As we all witness the devastation of Hurricane Harvey, we are reminded of the responsibility of local broadcasters to serve those in need. And we're pleased DirecTV understood the importance of our local commitment and accepted Raycom Media's extension.
