Phenix City Council votes to lease multi-million dollar radio system

Phenix City Council has voted yes to lease a new radio system from Motorola Solutions.

The system will include a new digital radio system that will allow all city employees who use radios to communicate with each other. A down payment of $1.3 million has been set aside, and more than $2.5 million dollars will be borrowed next year to pay for the new equipment. The exact cost for the radio system is $3,983,747.85.

Finance Director Steve Smith says this is the first time the current council will have to borrow money.

"It's not just buying a bunch of new radios," says Smith. "You'rebuilding, you know, an entire telecommunications infrastructure with two 300foot towers with the computer systems and servers that will serve that system."

The payment will include all equipment needed, as well as two new 300 ft. towers that will be built to enhance the service and reception for the new radios.

The price tag will also include maintenance and upgrades on the system Phenix City Police Chief Ray Smith calls timeless.

Council says it will take about a year or so to complete the overhaul from analog to digital radio frequencies.

City leaders say the idea has been in the works for about 10 years.
