Columbus Amateur Radio Club hosts annual field day exercise

Posted: Updated:

If you were in Flat Rock Park in Columbus on Saturday, June 28, you may have noticed some unfamiliar equipment.

The Columbus Amateur Radio Club is hosting its annual field day exercise Saturday and Sunday.

The group is practicing emergency communication skills with other amateur radio operators throughout the country without using any power, internet, or cell phones.

They are located at different sites in the park, and they invite everyone to come out and see their demonstration.

"One of the things that we do is, you have 24 hours to set up, and what that does is it simulates emergency conditions so if we lose phone services or if there's a hurricane or a tornado that takes out the cell towers then we still have radio to communicate," Says Jerry Dunman, Activities Chairman for Columbus Amateur Radio Club.

The group will be on the air non-stop for 24-hours until 2 p.m. on Sunday, June 29.
