Renovation to shopping center in Auburn expected to bring new business and jobs

AUBURN, AL (WTVM) -

A popular shopping destination at the corner of Glenn Avenue and Dean Road in Auburn will soon receive multimillion dollar facelift.

The Corner Village Shopping Center has received little attention in 30 years, but with the approval of a development agreement by the Auburn City Council Tuesday, July 1, a nearly $9 million dollar renovation will soon be underway.

"I think there have been a few attempts through the years, some different scenarios, but this is a pretty significant investment and it will bring in a lot of sales tax dollars," explains Mayor Bill Ham.

Renovations to the existing shopping center include upgrading façades, adding parking lot islands with landscaping, new signs, improved internal traffic circulation and new lighting.

A new 7,500 square foot commercial building will be constructed along Glenn Avenue and a 26,000 square foot addition will be added to the existing Kroger.

"It's a great location. It's centered right in the middle of the community. It's always been successful," says Ham.

The City Council approved tax rebates for the construction totaling $850,000 over the next ten years.

"Bring more people, we would like to have everyone," says Stephanie Scott, an employee at Tenda Chick.

Scott says she looks forward to the updates and the business it will attract.

"It will bring in more people and people that come in from out of town. They'll see how big we're growing and excited to have all these new things coming up."

The City anticipates construction to begin later this year and when completed it is expected to generate 185 new jobs.
