COLUMBUS, GA (WTVM) -

Officials have identified the body of the suspect pulled from the Chattahoochee River earlier on Wednesday as 19-year-old Amere Powell.

Coroner Buddy Bryan confirms Powell's body was pulled from the Chattahoochee River about 100 yards from the steam mill.

Columbus Police and other emergency responders were searching the river for a man who jumped into the water to avoid arrest, they say.

It started when an officer tried to arrest Powell 21st Street and 2nd Street on Wednesday morning, July 2, around 8:15 a.m.

Major Julius Graham says the suspect was trying to elude police when he ran down the bank across the rocks and jumped in the river. He said the officer tried to rescue the man, but the current was too strong.

Powell was reportedly handcuffed at the time.

The suspect had outstanding warrants, but police did not say why the man was under arrest.

Several emergency responders, including a dive team, are on the scene searching the area.

In a separate incident up river, a woman was in a altercation with a homeless person, and also jumped in the water to try and escape police. She has been arrested.
