Auburn police warn of several vehicular thefts, offer safety tips

AUBURN, AL (WTVM) -

The Auburn Police Division is investigating several reports of items being taken from unlocked vehicles between June 30 and July 1. The thefts occurred in the areas of Antler Ridge Drive, Deer Run Road, Danbury Drive, Bentley Court and Belmont Drive.

Unknown individual(s) illegally entered approximately five vehicles parked at residences and stole tools, electronics, a pistol, a wallet and U.S. currency with a cumulative value of over $1,900.

The cases are currently being investigated by the Auburn Police Detective Section; anyone with information regarding these cases or any other is asked to call 334-501-3140 or the tip line at 334-246-1391.

Taking property from a vehicle, whether locked or unlocked constitutes unlawful entry of a vehicle and theft and will result in criminal charges.

The summer months result in increased pedestrian traffic and activity in neighborhoods. The Police Division reminds the public to keep vehicles secure and not leave valuables within view; reporting any suspicious activity is necessary in the prevention of crime.

Parents are reminded to discourage juveniles from loitering in parking lots, walking behind closed businesses, vacant residences and apartment building parking lots during unusual hours.  Motorized vehicles, golf carts, etc., driven on the roadway must be properly equipped and operated by a licensed driver.

Reflective vests or reflective clothing should be worn while walking or jogging, particularly just before, during, and just after dark.  Motorists are reminded to consider the additional seasonal pedestrian traffic and drive accordingly.

Contact the Community Services Division of the Auburn Police Division at 334-501-3110 for additional safety tips, advice on how to keep you and your property secure, or to request a home/business safety assessment.

Citizens are encouraged to call Auburn police by dialing 911 or by calling the anonymous tip line 334-246-1391 to report suspicious activity.
