COLUMBUS, GA (WTVM) -

On Wednesday morning a teenager fleeing police custody jumped into the Chattahoochee River and drowned a short time later, unable to swim.

Police say they had been looking for 19-year-old Amere Powell since March.

Working off an anonymous tip, police went to Chase Homes looking for Powell. According to investigators, Powell was wanted in connection to a March burglary.

Powell entered the turbulent waters shortly after 8:30 a.m. Columbus fire and EMS division Chief Tim Smith tells us it took two and a half hours to find his body.

"We had four divers on the scene, we also had our swift water team from the fire station downtown," Smith said. "We actually had three divers that dove. Witnesses say it looked like he was unable to swim."

Muscogee County Coroner Buddy Bryan says rigor mortis had already set in by the time his team arrived on the scene to process Powell's body.

A source tells us the handcuffs that were placed on Powell were found along the path he took from the apartment complex to the river, and are unsure how Powell was able to remove those handcuffs.

We're also told a family member jumped into the river this morning as well trying to find Powell. That woman was apprehended by police.
