Road construction on Schatulga Rd. expected to last another year

COLUMBUS, GA (WTVM) -

The large orange cones which line Schatulga Rd. may be a bit of a nuisance for some drivers, but city officials say they'll be there for at least another year.

New sidewalks and a wider highway are on course for one of the most heavily traveled areas in Columbus. Nearly 4.3 miles of asphalt pave the way for a bigger, better Columbus.

"We're trying to develop the technology part so that people will want to come in and build," says City Planning Coordinator Felton Grant.

Almost $12 million has been invested into the Eastern Connector Road Project that travels along Schatulga Rd.

"I'm excited about it, because it would really open up the panhandle a little bit, and people will have an easier way to get in and out," Grant exclaims.

Grant says the route will begin right off of Buena Vista Rd. and lead to JR Allen Pkwy, Manchester Expy, and  I-185.

"And [it will] continue on to Phenix City where it intersects with 431 and 280," explains Grant.

Once complete, the connector will yield a four lane highway. It's currently two lanes. The thruway will also have sidewalks, landscaping and a irrigation system.

Officials are working to make the area more inviting and profitable.

"To create commerce, which creates jobs, which creates tax base, so we're hoping that after we do this park, it will generate some new businesses in town," says Grant.

Officials are also looking to decrease unemployment, expecting the businesses to create new jobs. The project is scheduled to be complete by July 2015.

Grant says the city is planning ahead for the future of Columbus by making our roadways easier to travel and more inviting.
