SANTA MONICA, CA (CNN) - The family of a 51-year-old woman shown in a video being repeatedly punched by a California Highway Patrol officer says they plan to sue the agency.

Some viewers may find the video disturbing.

It happened last week along the Santa Monica Freeway.

The woman who was beaten is Marlene Pinnock.

Her attorney says Pinnock's injuries are severe, and that she is being held against her will at a psychiatric hospital.

A police report says the woman posed a danger to herself and other drivers because she was "walking within traffic lanes" at times.

It also says that when an officer asked her to stop, she “continued ignoring the officer's command" and became "physically combative."

A California Highway Patrol spokesman said the video only shows a small part of the incident, and that an investigation is ongoing.

The trooper shown in the video is on administrative leave.
