(CNN) – Violence erupted in Chicago over the holiday weekend with eleven deaths in dozens of shooting incidents.
Authorities say there were 24 shooting incidents on Sunday alone.
According to police department statistics, the holiday shootings follow a week in which Chicago had 52 shooting incidents.
Chicago Police Superintendent Garry McCarthy says that proliferation of firearms is part of the problem.
“And something that I've learned over the course of the last three years from being out on patrol with these men and women who put their lives on the line every single day is that there's a greater sanction for the gang member to lose their firearm from their gang than there is to go to jail for possession of that gun,” McCarthy said. “Because I always wondered what's going on, because I could tell you this, when I chased people in New York they used to throw their guns away. We chase people here in Chicago they keep the guns.”
