CENTER POINT, AL (WBRC) -

On Monday afternoon, just a few hours after watching his uncle die in front of him, 18-year-old Roderick Flennory had a range of emotions.

"Just shocked, mad. Heartbreaking," he said.

Jefferson County Officials found 40-year-old Agila Lee Flennory dead outside his home in the 900 block of 21st Avenue Northwest in Center Point around 6:30 a.m. on Monday.

Flennory said he had just taken out the trash a few moments before and was heading back into his family's home when his next door neighbor came outside.

"I was almost up the steps and he called me back and he asked where my uncle was," Flennory recalled. "He just said it was something important."

Flennory said he woke his uncle and the two of them walked back to the neighbor. He says the two men spoke for a moment and then the neighbor whispered something in his uncle's ear.

Flennory said the next thing he knew the neighbor had pulled a gun, fired into the ground then shot him in the leg.

"When he shot me, I was spooked because I didn't know he'd do something like that and I fell to the ground," Flennory said.

He said he looked around and saw the neighbor then shoot his uncle twice in the stomach and four times in the chest. He saw the suspect run away and his uncle turn towards to the house.

"He tried to make it up the steps to my grandmother but he died in my auntie's hands," said Flennory.

Roderick said he doesn't know why the neighbor shot his uncle or him. He said he doesn't know of any problems between them.

He said he knew the suspect for years and that he had always been friendly, even playing basketball with him.

"He's a cool person. I just didn't know he'd do something like this," Flennory said.

Jefferson County deputies have taken a suspect into custody but have not yet announced any charges.
