TEMPE, AZ (CBS5) -

A late-night storm that slickened Valley freeways was blamed for a series of crashes in Tempe involving nine cars that injured several people, including an 18-month-old baby.

The first in the chain of crashes on the Loop 101 Price Freeway near University Drive began just before midnight Tuesday and led to three more, an Arizona Department of Public Safety spokesman said.

Four people had to be cut from their cars, including a family of three adults and the baby, the spokesman said.

The child suffered internal injuries and was taken to a hospital. Its condition was not known. The father, mother and 19-year-old son suffered cuts and lacerations, and all were wearing seatbelts, the spokesman said.

The other three crashes were mostly fender-benders, the spokesman said.

The spokesman encouraged motorists to go even slower than posted speed limits on Valley freeways when monsoon rains fall because there is less traction and it would give more time for braking.
