J. Crew: 'XXXS' size sparked by customer demand in Asia

The clothing company J. Crew said its new size "000" was sparked by customer demand, specifically in Asia.

The New York Daily News reported that the retailer denied that "XXXS" clothes are vanity sizes.

J.Crew started offering the extra small size, which was meant for someone with a 23-inch waist, back in May.

Since then, it's been criticized by fashion experts who claimed that the retailer was trying to capitalize on vanity sizing. Vanity sizing is viewed as a gimmick where a clothing maker labels larger clothing a smaller size.

However, J. Crew said vanity sizing had nothing to do with it. It said it actually sells very little XXXS clothing. The size is only available online and in its Hong Kong store.
