Old Lyme bans large coolers at local beach

OLD LYME, CT (WFSB) -

One local beach is telling sunbathers to keep their large coolers with all of their cold drinks and snacks home.

Old Lyme leaders have voted to keep coolers larger than 5 quarts out of Sound View Beach, and the reason is the amount of trash they said comes from them.

Town leaders have said they are noticing a recent trend in which larger coolers equal larger crowds and more trash being left behind on the town's small public beach.

The new rule is also expected to cut down on alcohol brought to the beach.

"It's ridiculous. I should be able to bring whatever I want for my kids to eat and not have to make sure it's in the right sized cooler," said Stephanie Jones of Plainville.

There are temporary signs posted to tell visitors about the new restrictions. And as for enforcement, First Selectman Bonnie Reemsnyder said they'll have new signs posted, and beach rangers will be checking.

"They will be telling those who arrive with coolers that they can bring them back to their car, or leave them on a picnic table that's in the parking area," Reemsnyder said.
