Walmart bank robbery suspect arraigned Wednesday

Ellis was arrested Tuesday Ellis was arrested Tuesday

A 26-year-old Toledo woman was arraigned Wednesday in Sylvania Municipal Court on robbery charges.

Sylvania Township Police say Diona Ellis robbed the Woodforest Bank inside Walmart on Central Avenue on Tuesday. According to police, Ellis had a family member unknowingly drop her off at the Walmart around 6:30 p.m. Tuesday, where she passed a note demanding cash. She did not have a weapon.

The bank teller gave Ellis the money, and she went back out to her family member and rode away.

Police pulled the vehicle over at Richards and Dorr, where they had stopped several vehicles. At Dorr and Byrne, Ellis' vehicle broke down. That's when she was arrested.

"There were several cars stopped for this incident, and my understanding from my detective was that about 90 percent of people were great. They understood it is a police issue and they got it," said Officer Ray Carroll with the Sylvania Township Police. "I'm sure it was an inconvenience for them and I am sorry it was, but we were able to make an arrest because of it."

Carroll says the money was returned to the bank, and police recovered the note and have a statement from Ellis.

"The statement that we got from the suspect helped us ensure that we had the right person," he said.

At her arraignment, a judge ordered Ellis be held at the Lucas County Jail on a $100,000 bond.
