VERNON PARISH, LA (KPLC) - A Vernon Parish man has been arrested following reports of thefts from oil well sites in the Evans area.

James Michael Jeane, 39, of Evans was originally arrested on June 18 and booked into the Vernon Parish jail on one count of theft over $1,500, said Sam Craft of the Vernon Parish Sheriff’s Office.

Further investigation led to Jeane being arrested a second time on June 27 and charged with three counts of criminal mischief, three counts of criminal trespassing, one count of theft and one count of theft of oil/gas equipment, authorities said.

On July 11, Jeane was arrested a third time and charged with one count of theft over $500, one count of criminal mischief and one count of trespassing.

A total bond of $44,800 has been set. Jeane remains in the Vernon Parish jail.

The investigation is ongoing and additional arrests are expected.

"Area residents who deal in the scrap metal trade are reminded that law enforcement monitors all sales conducted at such businesses. Scrap metal dealers within the State of Louisiana are required by law to obtain personal identification information, a photocopy of legal identification presented by the seller and photographs of all items being sold," Craft said in a news release.

Sheriff Craft cautions area residents to be vigilant in monitoring property where these items are located and immediately report any suspicious vehicles or persons to law enforcement.
