LUBBOCK, TX (KCBD) -  Two people are in the hospital after a truck crashed into a building at 1:30 p.m. on Saturday, just east of Lubbock on Highway 84.

John Gonzales, a Lubbock DPS public information officer, said the driver of the truck veered off of the road and crashed into a nearby business. The building's roof collapsed, trapping the driver and passenger in the vehicle.

The driver has been identified as 49-year-old Benjamin Ortiz. His passenger was 43-year-old Melissa Martinez. Both are from Lubbock.

Multiple fire departments responded to the accident to help remove beams from the vehicle so they could rescue the people inside.

Gonzales said both the driver and the passenger were taken to the hospital, one by ambulance the other by aerocare.

DPS is still investigating the incident.
