Stephen Garcia, Steve Spurrier trade laughs, memories at SEC Media Days

HOOVER, AL (WIS) -

Three years ago, an already agitated coach Steve Spurrier stood before a media contingent to air his frustrations about dismissing then-starting quarterback Stephen Garcia.

"We are all saddened that this has occurred," Spurrier said. "We all feel like we've given Stephen numerous opportunities to be a student-athlete here at South Carolina."

Garcia himself at the time said he was "shocked and flabbergasted" by the decision to kick him off the team.

Three years later, the acrimony that existed between the two seems to have evaporated at SEC Media Days when the two reunited. In fact, they were down right friendly to each other.

After Spurrier finished his media availability Tuesday morning, Garcia was given the opportunity to ask his former coach the last question, much to the delight of those in attendance who had been waiting for the moment since word spread of Garcia's appearance.

Garcia, who is now working for Saturday Down South, tossed Spurrier a softball, asking what the difference will be this season with new starting quarterback Dylan Thompson taking over the reigns of the offense.

Instead, Spurrier took the opportunity to poke fun at his former signal caller, saying he had seen him on the news last night.

"I said, 'Did he join the media, or did he join Duck Dynasty," said Spurrier to a chorus of laughter.

Garcia, sporting long hair and a beard, could easily pass for a missing son in A&E's hit television series about the Robertson clan.

Still, the two shared a moment of laughter and shook hands when it was all said and done.

Despite season after season of the pointed rhetoric at Garcia's play, Spurrier heaped praise on Garcia and says he's got a chance in the media.

"You know, maybe he's got a chance to be a good one," said Spurrier to the media gaggle. "Heck, you guys made it, so he's got a chance also."

Garcia said after the meeting that he hadn't blushed like that in a long time.

"It was very intimidating, but it ended up being good," said Garcia. "This is a whole new experience for me, but I'm very excited about it."

With the coach-player years completely behind them now, Garcia says he's a huge Spurrier fan.

"Their family is awesome. They've always been great. Obviously, we had some bumps in the road and I wish I wasn't so damn hard-headed," said Garcia. "You know, you live and you learn. I've got nothing but good things to say about coach Spurrier."
