Man rescued from 13th St. Bridge

(WTVM) -

Officials say Columbus firefighters rescued a man who was suspended from the 13th Street Bridge.

Columbus Fire Battalion Chief Bryan Watkins says they received a call that a construction worker had gotten caught on the side of the bridge.

"It appears a piece of the metal came loose and hit him, and injured him," says Watkins. "He was able to hold onto the scaffolding. We came over the top with a high angle rescue team, and was able to stabilize him, get him in a stokes basket, lower him down to the river, and get him back up."

The man was placed in an ambulance and taken to the hospital.

The 13th St. Bridge reopened after a total shutdown during the rescue, which caused major traffic delays in downtown Columbus and in Phenix City.
