Gold Star Families experience basic training at Fort Benning

The US Army is making sure that relatives of deceased soldiers stay connected to their military heritage, and they say one way to do that is to have the families experience some of the training soldiers go through.

Friday, July 18, a few Gold Star Families got an overview of One Station Unit Training (OSUT), and got some first hand military training experience at the Sand Hill training areas of Fort Benning.

They were able to conduct training at Eagle Tower and Slide for Life, as well as traverse an obstacle course, view a static weapons display and have lunch in the dining facility.

Nicole Dicenzo, a Gold Star family member, says, "When you lose somebody in the Army, there's a hole in yourheart, because you can't give them rollin' in the dirt, goin' down a repeltower and all that good stuff. So this is amazing. It gives my kid, and myself,a piece of my husband that I couldn't have."

The US Army says the training program is also a way to let Golden Star Families know that the sacrifice made by their relatives will always be remembered.
