Wearing contacts in fresh water can cause eye problems

(WTVM) -

If you plan on swimming in the river and you wear contacts, we have a warning for you.

Eye experts say getting in fresh water with your contacts still in can cause serious damage to your eyes.

Sterling Cannon, ophthalmologist at West Georgia Eye Care Center, says he sees cases every year and the community needs to be informed.

"People are active, they're outdoors, they're in environments that may not be quite as clean plus the warm weather pre-disposes itself to bacteria and other organisms that can get into the contact and cause big problems for the cornea," Cannon explained.

We are told one of the rare, but potentially severe problems associated with fresh water contact lens exposure is infection by an amoeba.
