TROY, AL (WSFA) -

A man wanted for three homicides in the Florida panhandle was arrested in Troy early Tuesday morning, according to the Troy Police Department.

The Bay County, FL Sheriff's Office says Derrick Ray Thompson, 41, of Pensacola, was taken into custody at a hunting lodge on County Road 1165 in Pike County where he had done electrical work in the past.

A Troy resident spotted a Toyota Tundra entering the hunting lease Monday night and recognized it from a description released by police as the possible vehicle the murder suspect was traveling in.

The truck belonged to homicide victim Allen Johnson who was found dead on Monday afternoon in Bay County. The truck was missing from Johnson's residence. Johnson is a former deputy with the Bay County Sheriff's Office. The motive was apparently over narcotics, specifically Oxycotin.

Investigators believe Thompson also committed a double murder in Santa Rosa County, FL on Saturday. Details on that case are limited.

A team comprised of U.S. Marshals, the Troy Police Department and Pike County Sheriff's Office surrounded the property and waited all night. Thompson tried to leave the property around 5 a.m., but authorities had rigged the electric gate he had to pass through so it wouldn't open.

Following the release of a flash bang device, it was all over for Thompson. He was stunned and never put up a fight, according to police. Agents moved in and took him into custody in less than 15 seconds.

"He was trying to get away from there," said Lt. Bryan Weed with the Troy Police Department. "Our best chance would be to try to make contact with him at one of the driveways leading to the property."

Thompson waived extradition in a Pike County courtroom. He will be extradited back to Bay County, FL for his first appearance on an open count of murder.
