TUSKEGEE, AL (WSFA) -

Crews are currently working to improve four student residences at Tuskegee University.

The university began renovation to Banneker, Bethune, Douglass and Young Halls in May. The upgrades are expected to be completed by the Fall 2014 semester.

"It is important that the university provide quality living spaces for its students," said Kippy Tate, vice president for capital projects and facilities management. "Therefore, we have embarked on a very aggressive schedule to have these residence halls available by the fall semester."

These upgrades come after students took to social media to voice their displeasure about the living conditions at the university.

Banneker and Bethune Halls are receiving new exterior windows. Each room will also be equipped with individual heating and air conditioning units.

There will also be motion sensors that will detect when a person enters and exits the room. The rooms will also receive new flooring in the central hallways and residence rooms, upgrades to restrooms and showers, refurbished furniture and a new roof.

The common restrooms and showers in Douglas and Young Halls are receiving complete plumbing upgrades and toilet replacements.
