COLUMBUS, GA (WTVM) - There was a clear winner for the Muscogee County School Board District 2 seat July 22.
John Thomas took down the school board's most-senior member, John Wells, who has served on the Muscogee County School Board for 28 years. Thomas won with 80 percent of the vote.
We were at Thomas' celebration tonight in Columbus, where he says he's grateful to all his supporters and volunteers.
The newly-elected school board member tells us, he hopes to help restore the trust in the Muscogee County Board of Education, which includes not wasting money on no-bid contracts.
In his winning speech, Thomas told News Leader 9 he plans to do, "Let people know where their money is going...why aren't resources in the classroom where they need to be...I want to see teachers protected...and students get the best possible quality education."
Thomas, whose wife is a teacher, says he's not a politician but is reform-minded and she thinks he'll be able to make a difference.
News leader 9 also reached out to incumbent John Wells. He called us back just a little while ago and he says he has called Thomas to congratulate him and also says he's proud of his years of service on the board.
