MONTGOMERY, AL (WSFA) -

There are many questions surrounding expenses and funding transfers made by the Alabama State University Board of Trustees, but few answers.

WSFA 12 News obtained financial records for the board's last nine months, but there is only vague documentation for tens of thousands of dollars in travel, lodging and catering expenses.

WSFA 12 News gave ASU an opportunity to explain those expenses, even requesting receipts or documentation, and so far that has not happened.

Over the past nine months, the board has spent roughly $21,000 on travel, more than $31,000 on catering and food, nearly $40,000 for lodging, hospitality and speakers, and they cater for the football and basketball games, to the tune of $18,000. These numbers are based on our interpretation of their broadly labeled report.

Chairman Elton Dean has not returned our calls about the request for his resignation, or these expenses. WSFA 12 News caught up with him Wednesday after an unrelated meeting, but he denied knowing about the expenses and would not comment on the request for his resignation.

WSFA 12 News also reached out to Governor Bentley to see if Dean had attempted to set up a meeting with him. His office confirms that no meeting has been scheduled with Elton Dean, but he hopes both board members agree to voluntarily resign.

WSFA 12 News has made multiple open records requests to ASU starting last week for some of these documents.

On Wednesday, we received a set of documents showing a $100,000 transfer request to the board's account. It was requested by John Knight on his last day at ASU, and was approved by Elton Dean, noting an approval to process.

WSFA 12 News is told that the new financial officer has put a hold on the transfer because it must be voted on by the whole board. So far, no one has been able to explain what that money is for or where the $100,000 is coming from.

WSFA 12 News also learned the board scheduled a retreat at The Legends in Prattville even though there wasn't enough money to pay for it. A notice Wednesday confirmed that the retreat was being moved to campus, but the retreat was canceled entirely on Thursday.
